It uses 12" x 2" x 1 1/4" wheels. So there you are: design done. You might lose a tiny bit of power in the belt efficiency, but I would just use a 1:1 pulley ratio. You can probably build a really great grinder for a lot less than the $1850-$1900 price of the Baldor 1217W.

It depends on your drive wheel size. On the grinders I make I use Leeson 3 phase 1800 rpm AC motors overclocked via the VFD to run at 2500 rpm. This drive's a 6" drive wheel and give me plenty of torque at 20 rpm to full speed and runs any ceramic belt very well. With a DC motor like your using you should have near full torque at all rpm's.

I'm collecting parts and planning to build myself a KMG-clone style belt grinder. I've read several places that the best way to keep your sanding belt on their respective pulleys is to put a crown on the drive and/or idler pulley. For those of you with a CNC lathe this might be easy but for a guy with a manual lathe its a bit harder to do.
