Before I forget it, there is a cleaner copy of the Atlas mill manual in DOWNLOADS. MMB-5 Rev 6 covers from the original M1, MF and MH through the final M1C, MFC and MHC. The MF originally had 4-step pulleys on the spindle and countershaft and with back gears was a 16 speed machine.

Searched for info on the proper belts, and found at least the spindle belt installed is the correct one: a 4L410. The paperwork says the counter-shaft should be 1-3/4" from the back of the foot. The other one, possibly for a 12" lathe, says 2". Mine is not more than an inch. Any farther and I can't move the spindle belt to another step on the ...
size of belts and and age for atlas lathe?
Age is a tough matter with Atlas machines. The serial numbers aren't coded at Clausing doesn't seem to keep historical records on them like they do for actual Clausings. I'd have to look in the basement to be sure, but the belts are both 4L section, I believe 39" and 42". Any parts store or supplier should have them.

The following parts came from a commercial ATLAS lathe with a 10" swing and 54" bed. The model# was OC54 and the serial# was 091651 This is the main spindle 4-sheave pulley cone.

No need to remove the spindle to replace a belt. I've got a horizontal mill (not Atlas) that uses one. While I could R&R the spindle to change a regular belt, I'd also have to R&R the back gear shaft. I've looked at that a number of times, and am still not sure how to do it. So I've still got the link belt.

Coolant contamination on mill spindle belts are typically due to a leak in the TSC system. Some types of coolants and cutting oils can deteriorate the rubber in the belt and can cause failures. Remove the spindle head covers and operate the TSC system. Find the leak and fix it.
