A horizontal cannot be used vertically and a vertical cannot be used horizontally. I understand that vertical shaft engines from lawn mowers are cheap to free- but either leave it vertical or find a horizontal shaft. Do not put work, time and money into an engine that will seize from oil starvation.
The vertical engine has gotten a bad wrap these days because of its supposedly unfriendly geometry. Convert vertical shaft motor to horizontal. With the engine shaft going horizontal would put the oil pump pickup up above the oil level on the side of the block along with the mounting surface to frame. 290 degree angle assembly.

01-12-2005, 08:38 AM. You can't turn a vertical shaft aircooled engine horizontal. The oil sump is in the bottom of a vertical engine for a reason. When you turn it sideways the oil runs into the back of the cylinder. Trailblazer 302 * Millermatic 212 * Syncrowave 180SD * X-Treme 12VS Feeder * Spoolmate 3035.
In this video, I show you the steps required to make the oil system in a vertical shaft OHV engine work to run horizontally.
That would be a Vertical shaft. vertical = I up/ down, Horizontal = - sideways. More trouble than what it's worth to try and make that engine work. Keep your eye out for a 3.5 hp lawn edger Motor or any Horizontal Shaft motor. The edger type will be easier or a mower with the blades that roll in front of the mower.
Vertical Shaft and Horizontal Shaft Lawn Mower Engines Those with vertical shafts cannot . Also, the mower's design and the placement of the carburetor and the crankcase may impede either type of engine from running on its side without causing potential damage to . get price. converting a horizontal shaft engine to side Weld Talk.
The horizontal shaft engine is oiled with a dipper that is attached to the connecting rod. It splashes the oil that is in the bottom of the case to lubricate. I am not sure on the layout of the dipper for lubricating a vertical shaft motor, but would bet that it isn't set-up for splashing oil from the side of the case.

-Flipped Engine: Vertical to Horizontal Conversion -Twisted Belt Drive. Each one of these systems is seeking to solve the vertical engine drive problem: vertical engines have their shafts pointing up and down. The question is: "How in the world do I get the wheels that spin horizontally, to spin using a vertical shaft?"
Received 70 Votes on 65 Posts. The oil "pan" on a horizontal shaft engine is at the base of the engine, and it is at the base of a vertical engine too, so when you stand a vertical engine on its' side, the base is on the side and the oil doesn't go into the space provided for it. The internal oiling system on vertical engines will not even ...
Horizontal cranks are generally forged and designed to run 8 hours a day 7 days a week for 10 years. Vertical cranks are usually cast which cuts the cost of a crank by 2/3 and the crank is near 1/2 the price of the engine. The vertical cranks are also designed to run for 10 years, but because they are only used in mowers, the 10 years is 2 ...
How hard would it be to convert a circa 1988 Craftsman II with the horizontal opposed engine over to using a vertical shaft engine? This old Briggs is seeing its last days and my only available replacement is a vertical off of a Toro (or one of those other brands, I can't ever remember the name).
The Predator 173cc OHV vertical shaft engine features gas-saving overhead valves for cooler, cleaner performance and longer life. It also boasts upgraded engineering and construction, like the durable cast iron cylinder or fuel shut off for safe transport. The vertical shaft on this gas engine makes it the perfect replacement motor for your lawn mower.
Exmark Lazer HP's use vertical shaft Kawasaki's and Kohlers. Much like the DC design of a straight shot from engine to deck belt. Exmark Lazers all full size regardless of gas or diesel use horizontal shaft engines. Kohler, Kawasaki, and Briggs. The deck drive belt goes through a mule drive that transfers power to the deck.
How do I convert a lawnmower to a gokart? Gokarts require a HORIZONTAL OUTPUT SHAFT. Most lawnmowers have a VERTICAL OUTPUT SHAFTS and are NOT suited for use on a gokart. Because the shaft points down the engines carburetor and oil sump are designed to operate in that position. Turning the engine upright would require a re-design of these systems.
Packaged with care, Carroll Stream Motor Company provides free shipping. This Honda engine is a 4-stroke OHC single cylinder, which is a 64 X 50 bore stroke. It is a 160 cc, 4.6 HP and 3600 RPM. The GC160LA is a recoil pull start. In addition, …
Though go-karts traditionally use horizontal mount engines, with a little modification, you can install a vertical shaft lawnmower engine to be the driving force behind your homemade racing machine. Taste again the speed, freedom, and exhilaration of the open road when you convert your lawnmower engine into the go-kart you've always wanted.
The problem with lawnmower engines is that they have a vertical drive shaft, usually coming out from underneath the engine itself. With the belt an pulley system, it's a case of mounting a small pulley wheel on the end of this vertically drive shaft, and another on the back axle (or any horizontal shaft). What happens the belt is that it ...
Vertical Shaft Engines and Go Karts When it comes to finding an engine, I'm sure many of you have noticed its much easier to get a cheap vertical shaft engine, than a cheap horizontal shaft. I'm sure you have also noticed, a vertical shaft engine is not a "Plug 'n' Play" type of engine, it takes time, and some fabrication skills to make it work.
The Motor. The generator project will require a vertical shaft gas engine from a lawn mower. The typical lawn mower engine will be 3 to 5 horse power and will have a 7/8" shaft, with a 3/16" key way and a threaded hole in the bottom of the shaft. Most of these engines have either 3 or 4 bolts holding them down to the existing lawn mower base. 2.
Another way to determine the approximate year of the motor is by the ignition system. Tecumseh first offered a capacitor discharge ignition in 1968 on their cast-iron engine models. Around 1976, electronic ignition became standard equipment on vertical-shaft …
Vertical shaft go-kart -easy. I saw the solution to this when I was a kid. Some ingenious father had made his kids a kart out of wood. The way to do this is to use a live axle (full-width shaft. on both rear wheels, both wheels will be driven). In the center of the shaft is a V-belt pulley. Mount the engine somewhat forward of this pulley, at ...
For example, the blade can be bolted directly to the drive shaft on a vertical shaft engine when used in a walk-behind mower, while a horizontal shaft is perfect for the pulley system used on an edger or the impeller in a water pump. The only time you'll likely have a choice between vertical and horizontal shaft engines is when you buy a ...

Subject: Vertical to horizontal conversion Sat Jan 14, 2012 11:37 am I have a freebie motor that I'd like to test the vertical to horizontal shaft conversion on. If it doesn't work, I'm only out a few bucks in gaskets and time.
As the motor turns Shaft A upwards it then turns Shaft C. Shaft C then moves Shaft B left and right. The addition of Shaft C would make this vertical to horizontal conversion precise and compact. Note that the only rotating parts are Shafts A and C. Shaft B would only move left and right. And unlike Kurts answer there's no need for messy joints ...

The amount of work would actually be very comparable because you need to disassemble an engine to rebuild it. As Richard stated above, vertical shaft engines are much more plentiful and far less expensive then horizontals. In my area you can get a modern vertical shaft tractor for anywhere between free and $100 without a mowing deck.
